The S'pht are organic beings encased in a cybernetic exoskeleton that have existed in the Marathon universe for millions of years. They are descended from the Jjaro, another race in the Marathon universe.
Although I'm not sure what gave you the idea that S'pht have wigs, I can say that the S'pht's cloaks signify their different ranks (such as the difference between an orange-cloaked S'pht and a purple-cloaked S'pht).
In the Marathon canon, it isn't really established whether or not the different clans employ completely different exoskeleton designs, but the S'pht 'Kr Defenders are obviously much different from the regular S'pht Compilers. One could argue that the different designs of S'pht have something to do with having different roles (the Compilers are normally used by the P'fhor for hacking computer mainframes and Defenders are more for filling out the role of combat). Although, the S'pht from the P'fhor ship in Marathon did look different from the ones on Lh'owon in Marathon 2 and Infinity, which may have been because of a difference in their clans.
