In Response To: Eternal X Commentary: "Deep Into The Grotto" (Forrest of B.org)

This post is all spoilers and walkthroughs for Marathon Eternal for Aleph One. For the Level list, see http://traxus.bungie.org/index.php/Eternal_Volunteers

This is a hard and sometimes aggravating level. You can't kill all the enemy, they just regenerate. However, that means that you must use new skills. Draw them all off one way, then race the other to explore it. I'm not sure where they regenerate, I think at the top, but you can temporarily clear them out of a limited area. They must regenerate, then travel to where you are.

The only thing that can kill the wraiths is the N-cannon or the blades. Both take the zero point nodules as ammo. You can use one blade in each hand. The blades use ammo very slowly, and one swing clears out anything within a radius about double the Phfor staff's radius. Watch out because the flying balls cause destruction within a short range when they die.

I'm still a bit vague on it. There is a square area in the centre which contains a saver, an air supply, and a nearby door to a charger. To get to it, go to the far SW then drop down a hole into tubes. Take the tubes till you can jump down into that square area.

Water is your friend. Many times the switch that opens a door adds water. Under water, only the wraiths can hurt you, excepting the odd lucky shot from the other enemies. So, try to never kill one of the non-wraiths once it is safely in some water. Although enemies regenerate when killed, they don't regenerate if impotent.

To the far east, at about the equator, there is a green charger in the rocky tunnels. The enemy seem to refrain from entering that area, so you can get a bit of a breather.

From that charger, there is a nearby place where you can climb up some rocks. That is a bit of a short cut to the ventilation tubes.

Remember to keep checking the little hole at the far NW. Eventually it opens up so you can jump down to some new tubes.

Generally speaking, climb up out of the square room, wander the rocky tunnels, drop down into some tubular area, then into a new room. Hit some switches, and soon you'll get some access back to the square room.

At the SE, there is a rocky tunnel to which you can grenade hop. It leads to an elevator that takes you down, but there is nothing but a locked door. What's that all about?

Also, you can grenade-hop up onto ledges at the point where you first appear. That leads only in a circle. This is the area where the enemies regenerate, I think.

By the way, I chose to trust Hathor. Again.
