Island vanished near Yucatan - Jjaro connection?

So I've been hearing rumours about strange events in Mexico.
It concerns an island called Bermeja which used to be somewhere on the border, near the Yucatan Peninsula(!) and which supposedly inexplicably disappeared in the 90s(!) and was never seen again.
Now although they claim that the CIA sunk the island to steal Mexican oil, and the other side of the argument claims that there never was an island in the first place, I'm sure that everyone on THIS forum knows what really happened?
