If you'd like to use an even older, better protocol, which supported chat, file sharing, and message boards long before Hotline was ever dreamt of, and which has decent, polished clients, #alephone on irc.freenode.net still exists.

I must confess the ops there can be a bit testy, but it's actually hard to earn a real ban. You might get kicked for long monologues of text speak "r u srs" or for saying "Fo shizzle" or using figlet, but you won't be banned unless you make a big fuss.
