Some Questions that I still have about Marathon

These are most of the things I still don't completely understand about Infinity.
1. At the very start of Infinity, why does Durandal act like some things in Marathon 2 never happened? Does the player end up in a different timeline from the start?
2. How many timeline are there? Do we go into any of them more than once?
3. In the "Envy" chapter, does the player make a "jump" between timelines without dreaming first? If so then where?
4. If in the end the player has changed what happened by going into a different timeline, then what happened to the universe/timeline for Marathon 1 and 2?
