Yes. A long time ago in an interview I did with Greg Kirkpatrick, I asked him:

"Is Gheritt's story an analogy for Strauss' experimentation on Durandal?"

He replied:

"It's analogous on two levels: Durandal and the cyborg's, take your pick."
