I actually managed to run out of the nook, hit the switch and kill most of the ticks with fusion cannon. The ticks help you somewhat cos they seem to hover at your mid level i.e. in line with your fusion cannon. It is very hard though. I must have died a zillion times. Onwards and upwards!
