In Response To: Help with "Deep into the Grotto" on Eternal (Xap)

I really enjoyed this level, probably my favorite in Eternal. I can't give you a detailed walk-though, because I've only played through it once, the level's pretty complicated, and of course it's also a pretty mad dash but you've got the principle right: you want to lower that force field. You get it done by pressing four switches in four different rooms off a hallway which opens onto the core.

Each of these four switches is enabled (a door is opened? can't quite remember) by another switch in a nearby room. You get to them, by wandering deep into the grotto and dropping down one of these ventilation shafts from the caves above. You know you've hit the right switch when the room you're in fills with water, because this means that a door has been opened into that core area, which means you can save and replenish. The level could also be called 'Rinse and Repeat'.

Here's about how it goes:

RINSE: You drop down a shaft from the caves, find a switch; hit it. A nearby door opens which lets you get at another switch; hit it. The room fills with water. Go save.

REPEAT: You make your way back up to the caves and find another way down to another room. Hit a switch, hit another, etc...

You do this four times total, and then I think the force field drops.

Fun, huh?

: I've been going pretty smoothly through Eternal X, but I'm stuck on
: "Deep into the Grotto". I got into the "core" and
: found a water forcefield, barring my way towards the (presumably) end
: terminal. Now, I've searched all around the level, and I've pressed every
: switch in all the side rooms (that you flood), and every other switch that
: I can find (like the two on the side hallways above the lake in the core).
: I've also explored everywhere, even places that aren't supposed to be
: accessible (by grenade-jumping). I found a diagonal hallway in this way
: leading to a locked door, but I don't think it is supposed to ever open.
: Anyway, the forcefield still isn't open. I can't figure out what I've done
: wrong. It doesn't help that some of the switches are reactivating, and
: there's no way to tell what most of them do. I've read a post by Doomguy
: talking about his difficulty with this annoying level, but it didn't help
: me (since a definite answer was never posted). So, this is what I ask: Do
: only the switches in the southern room (with 4 switches) control the
: forcefield? Is there some kind of special combination, becuase I can't
: figure it out if there is (and believe me I've tried every way I could
: think of). Or do the switches in other parts of the level control it too
: in some kind of complicated way (I hope not)? Can someone give me a
: detailed description of what switches control what doors/the forcefield?
: Thanks...
