Not late at all

In Response To: Am I too late to comment on Eternal? (rampancy)

: First off, I need to say: wow. Even though I've only scratched the surface of
: Eternal, it's made me feel something I've not felt in a Marathon game
: since RX's Tycho plank.

Thank you very much :-)

: 1) Your link to the updated map file for RC5 is dead - could you fix it? And
: what was it supposed to fix?

Oh whoops... I forgot the .zip in the URL. Try this. It's not an updated map for FC5 - it's just the map file from FC5, since (with the exception of some slightly updated shock staff sprites) FC5 differs from FC4 only in the map file, so I thought I'd spare people the huge download all over again. I don't remember now what it fixed, but it's whatever assorted little bugs were found in FC4.

: 2) I'm stuck on Sleep Perchance To Dream. Ugh. There's one thing I hate more
: than vacuum levels, and that's the Trip-O-Vision (tm). I'm not down on
: jumping puzzles - James Hastings-Trew's Silent As The Grave is still my
: all-time favorite level - but with the Extravision power up, I...ugh, it
: just makes it so needlessly difficult, IMO.

You don't have to climb at all on this level... it's all downhill from here. Just go with the flow and let the water take you there. Jah rule, mon. You'll have to climb this mountain later, but it won't be in trip-o-vision there.

: 3) Core Done Blew and Heart of Fusion are great levels; they're not complex
: like RX's was, and they didn't have the gothic feel to them of MI - they
: really captured the design aesthetic of M1 really well. First I wondered
: why you didn't use M:R's Revival textures, used in an M1A1 add-on, but
: then I began to like your modernized take on the original Marathon
: textures; it really gives your levels a very distinctive feel to them.

I'm glad you like them - they are by Adam Ashwell and Don-Martin Antell, respectively. And I didn't use any preexisting hires Marathon textures because Eternal is been in development since before they existed, plus I kind of like having all original content when I can. Besides, I don't want the Marathon textures to look too out of place next to four other texture sets of my own design.

: 4) What I am puzzled by are the amount of wide open spaces. Even the hallways
: and air ducts are very wide and expansive - I'm more used to the cramped
: confined feel that M1 gave, especially in Smells Like Napalm... and
: Arrival. Was there a specific reason why this is so?

It wasn't intentional, I think things just ended up that way. One of the things that I really like about Core Done Blew is that it has a lot of tiny tight little passages AND some big huge open spaces, and that contrast works really well. I wish I could have had more maps from Adam - Core Done Blew is really one of the best maps in the game I think.

: And to comment on your question about a release schedule, I'd like to say
: that I'd wait for Eternal Omega but I'd also want to play actual final
: version of Eternal X now - I don't see the problem in shipping what you've
: got now as Eternal Mark X, and then go ahead with Omega later. At the very
: least, if something happened with Omega that would hold it up, you've
: still got a final release shipped.

Aye, that's my reasoning as well. I'm just concerned with the PR effect of making a big splash in the media (meaning Bungie.net and IMG and such, places besides here and the Pfhorums) now, and then AGAIN in a couple months:

"Hey, Eternal is finally done! No seriously this time, this is the last version! I know I said it was 'done' three years ago, but that was in scare quotes... no quotes this time! All done!

. . .

Well... except the new weapon and player models and multiplayer... but those will be out in a few months, don't worry! For now, it's done! Until next version."
