In Response To: Re: Eternal X Final Candidate 2 (Forrest of B.org) Hi there, I mostly lurk but I'm having a lot of fun playing through the FC2, so I'll add my impressions. I don't have any experience mapmaking in Marathon; and this is the first time I've spent much time with Eternal, though loaded a previous version, and played some levels in a still earlier one. Mostly, I think it looks great. The prologue strikes me as particularly pretty with the very subtle colors on the walls and shaded patterns on the floor. Very cool! On the other hand the first terminal is very long. I might have read it all in an earlier version, but I think I read a few, dense screens, and then left to explore. It might be more palatable spread over several terminals? I thought both Deja Vu and Septococcal were excellent, fun levels: lots to explore, very straight forward, plenty of shooting. I did wonder, though, why all the doors were working so well. I remember how difficult Durandal made it for me the first time and this time saw no sign of him. Did you say that you caught flack for ugly Pfhor levels? Personally, I thought Dysmetria was gorgeous. Also a serious maze that really turned my head inside out. Sakhmet Rising started well, and I was excited about the race for time with my oxygen levels running low. When the level slowed down, though, I liked it less. It was less attractive than the earlier levels, fairly monochrome, and it felt familiar... is that because I've played a few of the Eternal levels before or is it based off a Marathon level? I liked the developing relationship with Hathor, though. Is she an Eternal creation or an AI in the original series? The name's familiar, but I can't place her. It was a sort of unpleasant shock for her to name me. I understand your reason and I think it gets the effect you want, so far, but it feels uncomfortable. It's probably not something you'll want to change after having worked this way for so long, but there are other ways to get a similar effect. For instance, a set of intimate epithets might evoke the intimacy, without giving the player the shock of being addressed by name. They'd also give you room for more expressiveness: 'my hero' when she's trying to seduce you; 'my partner' when she's working closely and efficiently with you; 'Tycho's slave' when you've abandoned her. Just thought I'd mention it. As far as bugs go, I haven't found many:
Anyway, that's as far as I've got. It's pretty darn good so far. I look forward to continuing. : Well "Final Candidate" means "I think it's done now, but take
: So far, nobody's said anything at all about Final Candidate 2 yet. I dunno if
