In Response To: Finished the last chapter (Blake37)

: Deep into the the grotto: Hard. Too hard, I think.
: The biggest problem is having to constantly move, and move correctly. The
: level can be completed pretty quickly if you go the right way, but that
: would be extremly luck the first time or few off. I found that if I stayed
: in one place for more than a few seconds, or took a wrong turn and had to
: go back, I'd get assraped by dozens of monsters. The other problem here is
: that since the map is so big and complicated, you have to use the map,
: which, for me anyway, means standing in one place for a long time. The
: third problem was, I ahd no idea what I was doing or was supposed to do.
: This one was veryt frustrating.

Are you using the gravitronic blades? The play style for this chapter was supposed to be reminiscent of wading through a sea of zombies with a pair of lightsabers, so you're supposed to be swarmed, but that's why you've got such uberpowerful weapons to fight back with.

Also, instructions for this level were at the end of the previous level: go down into the core, deactivate some circuits, and smash some wires. Unfortunately, as you noticed, the place is damaged and flooding, so not all of the doors work, and getting down into there is tricky...

: Frog Blast the Vent Core: Love it. I've got just a few little things to
: mention. First, when you enter the room containing poly 681 (with the
: first term in it) the siren cuts out a bit too abruptly.
: The texures surrounding the save term @ poly 431 don't all line up. These are
: the floor, ceiling and walls that frame the save term.
: And finally, in the last room, it was very hard to read the terminal because
: nightmares kept getting in from the adjacent room (one with big things
: that light up as the level progresses) This really killed the mood. I
: don't think that there should even be enemies in that last room at all,
: for mood type reasons. Just me, of course.

Ah, I thought I made that last room monster-impassible. Meant to do so at least. Will have to fix that :-)

: This message wil self distruct: Really did not like. I didn't know what I was
: doing, and there were far too many PID monsters that jump you if you stay
: still for a little bit. The end was too much. I do enjoy a good being
: chased by plasma, but a) I didn;t know it was going to happen b)the
: stairway is two feet wide and is filled with banshees that, when they hit
: you, send you flying, not to mention the massive explosions on top of
: that, which were very disorenting and c)it filled up even to where the
: exit terminal is, so I don;t know if there was a message or not. Also, for
: some reason, the nightmares were shooting invisable projectiles, which was
: really confusing and irritating.

Hmm invisible projectiles is odd, I've not seen that. Are they invisible like a cloaked S'pht, or invisible like the sprite is missing?

Also, again, are you using the blades? Dive into the melee! Though on higher difficulties the exploding Nightmares could be a bit of a problem, I imagine. What say you about meleeing the Nightmares - too much? Make them not explode? I already made it hurt less.

Also also, like Deep Into The Grotto, the mission was explained at the end of the previous level: Go make friends with our alien visitors or, if they're not friendly, blow their ship up so the Enemy can't capture it. As for the surprise, would some sort of "Warning: damage to these circuits will cause excess coolant overflow" terminal near the smashable wires help? (And there's no message at the end, you're teleported out by the Watcher just before the ship explodes, as he explains on the next level).

: We met in the garden thingy: This was cool. At first I though it was absurd,
: but than I realised that you could return to the top.

I'm considering making it so you can't just jump down from the top, but have to take the door (though the elevator can still return you back to the top). Did you jump or walk? What do you think about making players walk?

: I doubt that this is
: possible, but if you could make the end teleport delay untill the platform
: had started to rise, that'd be really sweet.

It would be sweet, but it's not possible :-(

: Where giants have fallen: Wow.

: Yeah, it's that cool. It'd be really easy just to jump into the hole before
: reading the terminal, but I suppose the uplink chip there provides
: curiosty enough to prevent that.

Maybe I should raise the rim of the hole on the door side, so you can't just jump straight in but have to go around.

Also, NOTE TO SELF: create a diagram of the Mount Point for a terminal pic. People are probably confused about how you can jump down into space from the top of a mountain, or if not that, then why the atmosphere doesn't all get sucked out.

(The idea is supposed to be like Fist-of-God mountain from Ringworld: a mountain so high it leaves the atmosphere, allowing it to have a hole that goes down outside the sphere, without the atmosphere all rushing out. In the sphere, this is used for bringing ships in and out. This is, obviously, a very small mount point, used for shuttles and such, which normally dock on the trellises around the hole).

: Near side...: Very nice. I really *really* like the way this map looks. It
: really looks like a city. Only two things: 1)the platform that is polygon
: 84 always makes a bouncy platform thing, so maybe delay the platform a tad
: to avaiod that. It hurts the mood a little. 2) exit term has no text.
: That's rather odd, and I think, bad.

The exit term is where the missing epilogue text is supposed to go (see Missing Features section from the release text). For now, it just takes you to the To Be Concluded screen instead. The end screen will be credits and pretty pictures once we get the epilogue text done.

: Overall: Needs some work, but very, very nice. Things that need work: 1) I
: didn't really know what was going on over the last few levels. 2) The PID
: dudes. If there's some way to make them look less cartoony, do it. The
: banshees do need to be see-thru, the death animation in preticular. The
: headless and nightmares look silly next to marathon creatures. Just the
: lack of complexity in the sprites, and jerky walking motion in the
: headless.

: It'd probably be fairly easy to add some detail to the sprites, just pop em
: into photoshop, but improving animation would probably be pretty hard.

: Anyway, nice going, it'll be great once everythings all straightend out!

Thanks again for great feedback Blake! :-)
