jägermeister's nightmare: mine problem

aficionados:
i can't seem to trigger the mines.
i have not yet used the conch weapon in the previous levels sofar and my weapon display shows: 5 MINES (3x). i don't know how NOT to load them into the conch weapon.
any help is appreciated.
