In Response To: Re: Marathon Infested LOOK/FEEL (Erlin Tanner) : Oh man, I'm going to come right out and say it. : I actually liked Rubicon's texture set. You're definitely not the only one, though we may be a minority. I loved, repeat, LOVED Rubicon from the first glance along the shattered hulk of the Chimera, even more so in the AO version. I'll concede that overall the texture set was dull and muted (save the Phfor starship set). But that wasn't a problem for me. My own FULL DISCLOSURE: M2 was my first Marathon experience, and I loved it as much as I would Rubicon years later. Texturewise, M2 was great. Storywise, it was loads better. For me, the difference between the success of Rubicon's tetutures versus that of M2's is the spaces that were being textured. Rubicon relied on a lot of extremely realistic architecture (starships, space stations), and some pretty darned believable alien architecture on Pfhor Prime. The textures matched up beautifully for me. I never had difficulty believing the scenery. M2's architecture was equally as believable, and I really liked the openness of the early Lh'owon levels. The textures worked just as well. Put the Rubicon textures onto M2 maps, or vice versa, and I'd get a headache in no time flat. : Anyway, in regards to your scenario - do whatever supports your work. I don't know if any of my above comments are helpful. If not, this is pretty much my point here. Imagine the spaces you'll be texturing, and go with what feels right. My advice, for what it's worth...To avoid creating boring tunnel-vision, tight spaces need contrast. The narrow passages and small rooms in Aye Mac Sikur are a good example of what I mean by contrast. Open spaces should have sparse ornamentation in the textures so the player's field of vision isn't overly cluttered (think Charon Doesn't Make Change from M2), unless you're looking for a specific effect (gates or chain barriers, etc.).
