I really enjoyed the M2 textures and feel withen the original game, but not so much with thrid party maps (my own maps standing above and beyond in terms of uglyness). Apparently they're hard to work with. And yeah, like other people have said, M2 is not very dark. It's mostly out doors in fairly pleasent places, and the story is about discovery, not doom or enslavment. M1 is darker, but most of the textures are human things, so if Infested is not mostly in human places, basing your textures too heavily off of M1 probably isn't too good an idea.
Combining disirable elements of each texture set will probably be your best bet, if you don't intend on designing your set from the ground up completly. None of those three sets have much gritt to them; the ships are clean, the outdoor tile sparkling.
