: Please reply, this is very important to me. : Alexander- I am a huge fan of M2 in every way, art and palette included, and so that's my knee-jerk reaction. But. M2's story supported its choice of art. The only time the game actually felt dark was on KYT, and even then only sort of. If you have a dark scenario (or you want your scenario to be dark, more accurately), then not choosing M2 is the right choice. The color palette reflects on every part of the game, as you noticed. If you want the scenario to feel rife with life, use an M2-esque palette. If you want to be darkly atmospheric, gritty, and at times outright scary, then don't, because you'll have an incredibly hard time achieving it. Actually, Marathon Infinity itself had a balance between the two styles. It was certainly much more colorful than M1, and it was certainly much more muted than M2, so there's another point on the spectrum to use as reference. My opinions on what other people have done with the texture sets when they've tried to break the mold (notably Rubicon and Eternal) is as narrow-minded as you'd expected: "This isn't M2 :( :( :(" In reality, Rubicon's textures are drab but overall alright (it's more the sprawling architecture and the inability to know where you are or where you're going). Eternal's high saturation and low value is a terrible (again, imo) combination. If I'm going to be playing Marathon in pink (e.g. the Pfhor texture set in M2, which is close to frustratingly ugly), it had better not be in [pastel]. And /that/ said, Eternal has a very distinctive style, and people will recognize it when they see it. It's not all bad. So... there's a handful of opinions for you. Hopefully there's something usable buried in there. :)
