Not to mention that users without OpenGL must use the Shapes file textures.

Sprites are stored RLE compressed, walls and landscapes (which take up most of the space) are not. Again, if you remove all that, users without OpenGL are doomed. "Replacement" images should only be used as enhancements to what's in the Shapes file.
