You mean this? That might be adaptable to stairs, but in that case I'm not sure "floating" would apply, since they'd be attached to the wall.
Also, if the player doesn't have to be able to climb directly onto the stairs from below, you might be able to use this trick.
Nameless, maybe you could give us a clearer picture of what you're trying to make?
