D2X-XL is still very much a work in progress, yes - it won't even work on anything less than a G4, but the devs are very responsive and attentive to bug reports and feature requests - the new features in the latest build are really amazing (like giving the Vulcan and Gauss Cannons tracer rounds).

Still, the original D2X is still around, and it still works fine - though for some reason, the mouse controls are very slow (you can fix this with USB Overdrive though).

If you're pining for Civ II, check out FreeCiv (essentially a F/OSS clone); it needs X11, but it's a Universal Binary.
