A friend of mine using SDL OSX was dropping off my Linux host as soon as the game loaded. It turned out his problem seemed to be caused by "fill the screen" - it went away when he unchecked that option (Intel iMac; no further specs, and despite my prodding he's not submitted a bug report...)
