Where's a good MIDI music-making utility?

Ok, this is SORT of Marathon related. I was listening to Alexander Seropian's music for Marathon and I've been feeling really inspired lately to make some nice, geeky digital music of my own on the computer. I was wondering if there may be any applications on the web for doing this that any of you would recommend and hopefully give a link to? Thanks.
