Marathon-BattleTech connection? *LINK*

I did a search on this but nothing came up, so I assume it's new.
I was poking around ClassicBattleTech.com today when I stumbled across some familiar-looking bits in the Story so Far... section, which I've never bothered to read before.
According to the official BattleTech backstory, the first faster-than-light spacecraft was built as part of a "Deimos Project", powered by a Kearny-Fuchida drive (Shaw-Fujikawa, anyone?) and used to found the first extrasolar colony on Tau Ceti IV.
If I understand correctly, BattleTech was introduced in 1984, but I don't know if this backstory was part of the original version or was added later. Coincidence or reference? I'm leaning towards the former, but I'll let you be the judges.
