In Response To: Re: Sinclair is a.... (Forrest of B.org)

: "Hame" is what the people of the planet former known as Trantor
: call their world. It's a variant on "home", as civilization has
: fallen and languages are diversifying in their isolation. Thus, the people
: of Hame are Hamish.

But don't these books take place over a timespan of many millennia? To say that a mere change from "home" to "hame" is extremely conservative would be an understatement of diabolical proportions...

For comparison, English "I" was something like "hego(m)" a few thousand years ago; although other languages have done worse in the same timeframe. Modern Albanian, for example, has "se" from original "oq"... Anyway, if you go ten thousand years into the future, the word for "home" in any given dialect is as likely to be "mxyzsptlk" as anything else. ;)

Erm... sorry about the rambling. I need to go beat up Isaac Asimov now...
