S'pht exoskeletons

Question for you all...

Do you think that the ancient (pre-conquest) S'pht used (or were build using) any complex exoskeletons with weapons, such as those seen on the Compilers and Defenders? If so, what did they look like?

Various bits of evidence:

Terminal picts in Marathon 2 depict S'pht with very basic cybernetics, just a hover-part (possibly with mechanical legs or arms in one picture) on their lower bits and an organic brainy-looking upper body with scrawny arms, one eye, and green blood.

The M2 chapter screen "Antiquities" depicts an ancient mural of what appears to be something like a Compiler, indicating that perhaps the S'pht had those forms back then. This could be in addition to their "naked" forms, or possibly they were just stripped of their exoskeletons when the Pfhor took them hostage (all relevant "naked" pics are in Pfhor captivity during their conquest). Keep in mind that this image was made by Craig Mullins, and could be not-entirely-story-accurate. (No offense to Craig, but he's an artist, not a story guy, and Bungie may well have said "damn that's beautiful, lets use it!" regardless of story implications).

However, M1 tells us that the S'pht are just a tiny bit or organic matter inside of the compiler exoskeletons. But contrary to that, as I recall, some concept art for the Compilers shows where the "naked" form is supposed to be inside of those cloaks.

Regarding the Defender exoskeletons, Durandal tells us that the S'pht'kr are more advanced than their enslaved cousins, and that we won't recognize their exoskeletons. But this could be because we've never seen the S'pht's native designs, only what the Pfhor forced them to use (the Compiler form). Again there is the question of whether there are "naked" S'pht inside of the Defender shells, or if Defenders are permanently bonded into those things. Also relevant is the question of whether the ancient, pre-conquest S'pht had anything similar in shape to the Defenders we see in M2/Infinity.

This is all for Eternal, by the way. I'm trying to figure out what kind of S'pht I could or should have running around on ancient Lh'owon. Thanks.
