: Just, out of idle curiosity - what currently exists, and what needs to be
: created?

Just a concept currently. Matt Simmons (a.k.a Scifiteki) did some work on it, but he hasn't returned my emails in quite some time and unless you live in or are willing to travel to the land down under, I doubt you'll get anything from him.

: I'm a shapes and physics art guy, not a map guy, but I could contribute to
: that end of things, if that particular ball needs rolling.

The good news is that the maps are all done - they're in M2, Infinity and a bit in M1A1. What needs to be done in addition to mapping out the entire plot line (I would be willing to tackle that one) is in repopulating all the original levels, rearranging level and monster flags to reflect changing missions and redoing some of the terminals. It's a fair bit of work, but doable if you're interested. A more challenging problem could arise if you decided to do something with the textures. Scifiteki actually wanted to use the original M2 and Infinity textures with the appropriate levels, which would have meant using scripting to swap texture sets on a level-by-level basis, retexturing all the levels (ouch!), or possibly both. This is where he chose to start for some unknown reason and this is where he got hung up. My preference would be to either use the Infinity texture set for everything, or to adapt or create an entirely new texture set encompassing the best of both designs. Although I'm not crazy about the textures, one possibility might be to use Forrest's Eternal textures if he would agree to it - this might be a nice compromise, but it would mean doing a fair bit of scripting at the least to use them unmodified with the existing M2/I levels.

If anyone is interested in doing some of this work, I would be more than willing to put together a level flowchart and perhaps to even rewrite some of the terminals, but I couldn't contribute much more given that I have a life and it's pretty busy, even without Marathon.
