Actually the human visual field is fairly close to 180 degrees. To demonstrate this focus on an object straight ahead and slowly move your hands out to the sides and back until you can just barely see them with your peripheral vision. If you then bring your hands together in a straight line, they should come together pretty close to the fronts of our eyeballs. This seems counterintuitive, but the retina is curved and together with the curved surface of the cornea, forms a fairly nice "fish-eye" imaging system. It's your brain that straightens everything out and makes your visual field seem flat. |
