Hard to explain why every single human on Marathon had such things implanted.
It could be something like a PDA/cell phone that lets them access the ship's network. But even then, there would have to be a few exceptions; people who just didn't bring theirs that day, or Pfhor who picked one up for study. Not that Bungie would waste a whole monster slot to create such an irrelevant detail.
Also, the prisoners on Unpfhorgiven wouldn't be allowed to keep anything like that. So whatever's broadcasting their location has to be internal/built-in.
Something like the heartbeat sensor in Rainbow Six? Or "scanning the planet for life signs" in Star Trek, Star Wars, and Stargate? But I don't know if anyone's gotten away with saying you could identify human from alien life signs at that distance.
It can't be related to sensors in the ship's halls, because it also works on Unpfhorgiven. Unless the Pfhor have tagged their prisoners with beacons, and Durandal reprogrammed your map computer to detect those?
I wonder if the Pfhor explanation applies to every level. But in The Rose, they haven't been there very long; I wouldn't think they'd have time to tag everyone.
