Actually, as nightmareish as the thought of mutual assured destruction was, the situation was very stable. At least we knew where the nukes were and no one was crazy enough to actually think of using one. I'm not saying we should go back to the way things were, but I think the world's a much more dangerous place today. Nuclear terrorism is more a question of when than if. We've used up a lot more of the world's energy resources and the liklihood of economic disruptions for energy costs is high, which may be a good thing - as someone put it, we'll run out of atmosphere before we run out of oil. Global warming is probably the single greatest threat to our future, and the Bush administration feels it needs more study. I'm not a pessimist and I think all these things have solutions - it's too bad we'll have to reach points of crisis before anyone does something about them. |
