I think it's important to to not restrict him in anyway, he needs to develope his own style. He's already going down the right path, and he will naturally become good if you just give him time to discover the mapping process.
Of course, I, simon, don, ryo and all others can show him some tricks and it would work best if he came to us and asked us the questions he needs to get answered. Inviting him to hotline like simon said is a sound idea.
