I thought HammerSpace was a reference to Thor, Norse God, who retired to fight crime for marvel. He would randomly have scene's with no Hammer and then suddenly the Hammer would be in frame smashing stuff to bits. However, don't quote me on this as I've never actually read an issue of Thor, just have a slight marvel fixation.

Just to help date things; D&D was Mid-Seventies invention, Marvel started publishing in August, 1961. Althought I'm not really sure Marvel would have an effect on E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.
