: Probably. 12-gauge is more practical and available, but that may not matter
: in the context of Marathon. 10 projectiles would mean 5 projectiles per
: shell, so it is certainly buckshot, maybe triple-aught buck.

: Interesting theory, except for the part about the shotty having a magazine;
: it don't. Keep in mind a shotgun shell is not small, and the WSTE-M5 would
: have a hard time carrying more than the two that fit in the chambers. I
: think it's possible that ammo supply can be acheived through teleporting
: and item to the player's hand (or maybe replicating it?) but there is an
: obvious reload animation for the shotgun showing the exposed barrels as
: the gun breaks, indicating there is a mechanical reload of some sort going
: on.

Yeah, I liked Theory #2 better than Theory #1. The obvious fact that the shotty doesn't have a clip was shoving its finger up my nose as I wrote it.

: After all, if you're teleporting shells directly into the shotgun, why not do
: the same for the other weapons?

"While going through some data I appropriated from the Marathon
(looking for design notes, of course) I stumbled across a reference
to a weapon used by Imperialist forces against the inserectionists
during the Ares Raid; July 14, 2444. (Never heard of it? I'm not
surprised!) Many years of loving craftmanship went into the design
and construction of this brutal tool of mayhem, I hope you can
appreciate that."

Okay, here's what I think, Durandal found the weapon and had it replicated. He said he found the schematics (er...references) of the weapon and didn't really stop to figure out much about it. The other weapons you use, on the other hand are all human made right? Assuming the "Imperialist forces" weren't human or had better technology that hadn't been shared or whatever.

: Otherwise I think the idea of being able to keep the weapons inventory in
: some other "hammer" space is pretty interesting, the problem
: with it is that zero proof exists for it beyond the speculation...

: "Hammer space"...is that like "Hammer time"?

"Hammer Space" is more of a joke that I put in actually. "Hammer Space" is something that is mainly used in anime, cartoons, and strange comic books (like my own) Basically, it has no scientific explanation or reality (but I could make one up) and it's used to explain how "Mr. Main Character" suddenly pulls a rocket-death-beam-nuke-the-whale gun out of his pants. XD

But, for theories sake, consider "Hammer Space" a scientific anomoly that wasn't proven until the WSTE-M5 shotgun was created. ;)
