Probably. 12-gauge is more practical and available, but that may not matter in the context of Marathon. 10 projectiles would mean 5 projectiles per shell, so it is certainly buckshot, maybe triple-aught buck.
Interesting theory, except for the part about the shotty having a magazine; it don't. Keep in mind a shotgun shell is not small, and the WSTE-M5 would have a hard time carrying more than the two that fit in the chambers. I think it's possible that ammo supply can be acheived through teleporting and item to the player's hand (or maybe replicating it?) but there is an obvious reload animation for the shotgun showing the exposed barrels as the gun breaks, indicating there is a mechanical reload of some sort going on.
After all, if you're teleporting shells directly into the shotgun, why not do the same for the other weapons?
Otherwise I think the idea of being able to keep the weapons inventory in some other "hammer" space is pretty interesting, the problem with it is that zero proof exists for it beyond the speculation...
