Now here's some food for thought: Marathon = System Shock (1 and especially 2)
Both have rampant AIs whose motivations are ambiguous and use (or fight against) the player to further their goals (Shodan and Xerxes, Tycho and Durandal)
Both have AIs that start out on our side, but are assimilated and betray us (Xerxes and Tycho)
Both games make us play as a nameless cyborg security officer (in SS1 we are the hacker who created Shodan, but in SS2 we are a grunt.)
Both cyborgs' AI masters have little respect for the player.
In both games Faster than Light travel is a new discovery for humanity.
Both have humans who make a pit stop in the Tau Ceti system and run into trouble there.
Both have BoBs (although they aren't called that in SS, the nameless identical corpses we come across are about as skilled in self-defense as our beloved M-Thon jumpsuited friends. But in SS most of them have been killed for us already.) Mmmm, Cannon fodder... :drools:
Both have assimilated BoBs, who yell strange things at us as they attack (Silence the Discord Vs Frogblast the Ventcore)
Both are FPSes that have deep storylines that are revealed by reading various terminals scattered throughout the levels (in SS they are actually recordings left by the dead crew members on discs, but you get the idea...)
Both games have big arsenals of cool weapons including pistols (and the SS pistols look strangely like the ones in Halo) assault rifles (but in SS the Security Officer remembers how to use the single fire mode) shotguns, rocket launchers, alien weapons, etc... Mmmm, guns.... :drools:
Both involve running around large, hi-tech starships, alien vessels and space-stations.
In conclusion, many games are similar. As someone once said about Halo, it's not like Bungie introduced anything new when they made Halo. But they did take everything that makes shooters good and put it all together. Since they did that with Marathon too (and all of their games, really) it's no wonder that they are similar. It's not really fair to compare each FPS that Bungie makes to all their other ones. Why not compare Marathon to Doom, or Wolfenstein, or Half Life, or who knows what else? They're all similar in various ways, and have their strengths and weaknesses.
