I've never used them for uplink chips, but the idea that I always had, obviously, was to use them like keys in Doom or Quake or whatever silly FPS you gathered up keys to progress in. But, the problem is, they don't affect locked doors at all.
But, the good thing is, we have a genius on our side. Download the Dark Star demo from Fileball(RyokoTK's scenario)and you will see succesfull implementation of the Door Keys. And the way he did it was to have locked doors scattered around, and the polygon(very small shelf)the key was sitting one would be the door/light activation, so the door could be opened, switch punched, etc.
