: The idea is that this gun was originally designed to fill a role similar to
: that of modern carbines and PDWs; something that would be given to
: non-frontline people who just needed something for defense. It is also
: supposed to be useful for picking off Pfhor at ranges greater than those
: possible with real-world sidearms, much as the Desert Eagle is used for
: big-game hunting. As you observed, a shotgun would do the job, but a
: magnum is smaller than a shotgun. Size matters for people who spend most
: of their time filling out papers.

I can see your point, but while PDW's tend to have the more powerful rounds, they are generally smaller calibre in the range of 4.5 to 7 mm, they are also typically automatic. The magnum round will travel farther, but without that scope they're not really ideal long range combat weapons. Your .44 magnum Desert Eagle is going to hold eight rounds, which is plenty for a hand cannon like that, but as a sidearm for someone not used to regular combat I'd hand out a true PDW like the HK HP5, or a regular handgun chambered in the easier-to-shoot .40 or 9mm with 15-16 round capacity. I'm not suggesting you throw out the handgun for Redemption, I'm merely questioning the necessities behind the design. Plus it WOULD be heresy not to start with a magnum, though if you didn't you wouldn't be the first...

: The magnum's rate of fire / recoil change is intended to balance the fact
: that the new gun fires something akin to a scaled-down anti-tank round and
: can indeed blow a Fighter in half. It's meant to be powerful, but not
: all-powerful.

Granted this is the 29th century and the requirements of combat have undoubtedly changed, but armour-piercing rounds are typically found in rifles. But I can understand that under certain production circumstances when only one type of waepon can be made for mass distribution, it is easier to make one gun and then several ammo variants for it.

: "Full-size" might have been the wrong way to put it. "Not
: sawed-off" might have been better, since the design in my head looks
: a lot like a Pancor Jackhammer with an extended barrel. The mechanism will
: probably have a Jackhammer-style cylindrical magazine for fast reloading.
: The weapon is gas-operated, so the gauge won't be larger than 12 and probably
: a little smaller, maybe .410. It makes up for that with an insane rate of
: fire.

Yeah, the Jackhammer is a beast. The only shotgun I had was a 12-gauge and I've never fired a .410 before, but I think this is generally a squirrel-hunting round. Going by gauges, I think the .410 is something like 60 gauge, so if you're going for a round that is small enough to increase capacity but still has huevos, I'd suggest a 28 or 32 gauge shell. Plus something as small as the .410 would make being able to change the load in-barrel rather moot because you can only pack so many 00 buck shots into a .410 shell.

The Jackhammer will pour out about four rounds a second but the standard mag holds only 10, though it is a 12-gauge.

: I've heard that the internal pressure generated by a .410 shotshell is much
: higher than that of a 12-gauge. Is this true?

Not sure about that.

: There will be smiling hippos, but you'd only be able to see them in terminal
: pictures.

Sweet.

: I'm thinking something around 5.56mm, with a forty-round clip. Imagine a
: FAMAS fitted with the Aliens M-41A's grenade launcher.

Can't go wrong with that old NATO issue stuff. If you use a FAMAS design, I'd suggest dropping that horrbily ugly handle/sight thing it's got on top. The FAMAS might get the job done but it sure is ugly.

: Visually, the Zip is best described as a cross between a MAC-10 and a Steyr
: TMP. The caliber would be very small, as this gun is supposed to be the
: 29th century equivalent of the FN P90 and H&K MP7.

I think this is closer to the PDW concept than the magnum, but like all weapons they all have their various applications.

: Not at all; it's good that someone knows this stuff.

I sorta learn as I go.

: I agree that the magnum is on the ridiculous side of the fence but hey, it's
: the Marathon tradition. And we all know that audiences just love a hand
: cannon...

They do.

Here's my personal anti-Pfhor weapon (no, not the folding chair):
