: Cool. I wonder, is there any way to make one fist faster but less damaging
: while making the other slower but more powerful? Sorta like a left jab-jab
: and then right hook...

Interesting idea. Another concept I was toying with was to have the player use one fist, a la M1, and have the alternate fire be a flying kick. It would solve the "only one firing animation per weapon" issue.

: I've never understood the insistence on using big magnum rounds for standard
: sidearms in the Marathon scenarios, starting with ".45 magnum"
: in M1. If I were to need that much firepower I'd just use a shotgun, but
: hey. In truth, a single .44 mag or .45 mag or larger shot would blast a
: regular pfhor fighter in half, but sometimes it takes three or more shots
: to bring one down. They would be admittedly more effective against larger
: targets, but so would a rifle or shotgun round. Magnums have their place,
: but the idea of an "offensive/assault handgun" in this calibre
: is a bit silly to me, but as long as it's the starting sidearm I think it
: will work fine.

The idea is that this gun was originally designed to fill a role similar to that of modern carbines and PDWs; something that would be given to non-frontline people who just needed something for defense. It is also supposed to be useful for picking off Pfhor at ranges greater than those possible with real-world sidearms, much as the Desert Eagle is used for big-game hunting. As you observed, a shotgun would do the job, but a magnum is smaller than a shotgun. Size matters for people who spend most of their time filling out papers.

The magnum's rate of fire / recoil change is intended to balance the fact that the new gun fires something akin to a scaled-down anti-tank round and can indeed blow a Fighter in half. It's meant to be powerful, but not all-powerful.

: That's a pretty cool concept, being able to set and lock the load settings
: within the shell before shooting. By full size, does this mean it has a
: standard rifle stock or just a pistol grip, or both? About how long is the
: barrel? What is the action? What is the capacity and what form does the
: magazine take? What gauge shotgun is this? Will the rounds have smiling
: hippos on them?

"Full-size" might have been the wrong way to put it. "Not sawed-off" might have been better, since the design in my head looks a lot like a Pancor Jackhammer with an extended barrel. The mechanism will probably have a Jackhammer-style cylindrical magazine for fast reloading.

The weapon is gas-operated, so the gauge won't be larger than 12 and probably a little smaller, maybe .410. It makes up for that with an insane rate of fire.

I've heard that the internal pressure generated by a .410 shotshell is much higher than that of a 12-gauge. Is this true?

There will be smiling hippos, but you'd only be able to see them in terminal pictures.

: Cool. What calibre/round capacity?

I'm thinking something around 5.56mm, with a forty-round clip. Imagine a FAMAS fitted with the Aliens M-41A's grenade launcher.

: Cool, same as above in terms of calibre and capacity?

Visually, the Zip is best described as a cross between a MAC-10 and a Steyr TMP. The caliber would be very small, as this gun is supposed to be the 29th century equivalent of the FN P90 and H&K MP7.

: Not trying to be picky or anything, just some technical questions...

Not at all; it's good that someone knows this stuff.

I agree that the magnum is on the ridiculous side of the fence but hey, it's the Marathon tradition. And we all know that audiences just love a hand cannon...
