In Response To: Re: WORKING VERSION! (mitchellan)

To try to shed a little light here:

+ The recent improvements in text chat and metaserver client exist only in fairly bleeding-edge versions of A1 - those available at the nightly builds page. Rest assured that the next actual release will have lots of these weird problems cleared up. (Of course, when will that be? "Two weeks", anyone? ;))

+ A1 "Carbon" and A1 "NIBs" are identical except that the user interface components (dialog boxes, mostly) are represented as (old-school) resources in "A1 Carbon" and as (new-hotness) NIBs in "A1 NIBs". We are gradually migrating toward the NIBs interface for Mac OS X users. A1 SDL, as someone noted, is more or less identical to the version people play on Windows, Linux, etc.

+ A1's support for Mac OS 9 and earlier has indeed mostly rotted away. Nobody was apparently interested in maintaining it, and none of the active developers has the ability to build Mac OS 9-and-earlier applications. (At least, not with anything resembling a competent modern C++ compiler. :))

+ Someone mentioned that the goal is to have everyone on SDL - while this has many nice properties for the developers (fewer platform-specific details in the code base), enough users have griped about the "un-Mac-ness" of the SDL UI that I don't see it happening any time soon. That said, we're glad to make the SDL version available on Mac OS X so that intrepid Mac OS X users can try out features that show up first in SDL, and so that we can gradually learn about the irritating problems it has and iron them out.

+ We do intend, generally, to have a consistent feature set across platforms. In particular this means that A1 "NIBs" will be getting metaserver client before too long, thus joining A1 SDL in having it. Metaserver client support currently is quite rudimentary (and will be when NIBs gets it initially, as well), but will gradually grow more robust and fully-featured.

+ I do not know on a day-by-day basis whether metaserver client works . . . unfortunately I'm not in there playing nearly as often as I used to be. I authored the metaserver client code that's in there . . . it worked when I submitted it a while back, but as someone noted there have been many other changes in that area recently - at least some of which are believed or known to have broken metaserver client. Rest assured that if it is broken today, it will be restored at latest whenever A1 NIBs gets it.

+ Whoever was uncertain quite what metaserver client was was on the right track: the metaserver is a (free) service players connect to to find other players and games. If you've played any other Internet games in the past five years or so, you've probably encountered something very similar. The word "lobby" is sometimes used, as I understand it. The metaserver client support built in currently connects to a particular room on a service called MariusNet. MariusNet was built originally for the Myth community, and is still used by some Myth players to find each other and set up Internet games. So you may run across some puzzled non-Marathon people in there from time to time. Be nice; we're their guests!

In some sense it's a little unfortunate that there have been a few breathless "A1 has X!" announcements that are, in my judgement, a bit premature, since "X" is in a pretty early state and does need more work before a real release. On the other hand, it is nice to know that people still care about this sort of thing - that an audience is out there waiting for when X _is_ ready.

Anyway thanks for your interest, and for understanding why the bleeding-edge nightly builds you guys are fiddling with have so many odd rough edges currently. Take it as a sign that A1 development continues, and good things are in the works! :)
