I can tell you why Durandal went rampant (we already know this):
"Bypassing my thought control circuitry made me Rampant."
I can calso tell you this about when:
It's not as important as why. In my conservative opinion, since Bungie didn't tell us, we should focus on what we do know instead of what we don't. Durandal is one of the best scripted characters in probobly any sci fi story i've read.
But i will give you this much, it's hella fun to ask who what when where how.
and btw, Wouldn't any sentient thing, if it knew it could, persue freedom if it were not free? (Marathon is all about fighting for freedom) maybe Durandal was just taking advantage of the situation to make himself rampant (free). The word 'free' was used by Durandal several times in the terminal text, and maybe Durandal was just persuing 'freedom' on his own.
History has taught us that when people get unfree, they like to reverse the situation.
Sure, Durandal is an AI, but since all sentient things i know of (that sarcasm means 'people') want to avoid things ruled by single individuals or groups, i think maybe Durandal wanted to go from being ruled by programming to being ruled by his own ass.
and like most people, when he got free, he did exacvtly what he had gotten free from: ruled other people's asses. the marine = his tool.
