Well they seem more advanced because they have better graphics, they are not really that effective, nor advanced, they actually look like the ones from our time, but lets compare them:
There are no Fusion guns in human arsenal on Halo, and the one in Marathon is specially done to short circuit electrical systems, so the Zeus class fusion would deal a LOT of damage on Chief's armor.
The magnums from Halo have more ammo capacity but the ones in Marathon have sniper scopes attached, of course I'm pretty sure you can attach one to those from Halo
The Marathon's AR is better than Halo's becuase it has a greande launcher attached... and if you look at the submachine guns and AR in Halo they are too small or unaproppiate to have a greande launcher attached
The Shotgun from Marathon is FAR better from the Halo's one... there's no comparison between both
There are no Flame throwers in human's arsenal in Halo
I don't really know of the SPNKR: in both games are good, but in Halo it can seek your enemies, while the Marathon's one is supposed to shot guided missiles, but the engine doesn't support it from the player's shots. Lets says it is a tie.
In Marathon there are no precision rifles, but you have the Flechette which is very powerful as well as accurate and you could even kill big shark with it from a ship!
I don't really know if there are more human weapons in Halo, but IMO Halo's human weapons lack of something, they are nothing really special or interesting.... don't misunderstand me, they're cool, and good designed, but they lack from imagination.

Well Mk IV has Durandal, the Jjaro, and their boxers :P... well actually having Durandal in your side is a big big advantage, and Chief has Cortana, which IMO couldn't beat Durandal, Leela or even Tycho.
