Unfortunately, you may have a corrupted saved game file - it happens occasionally. That's whay it's always a good idea to keep a saved game from the beginning of each level so you don't have to start over. Incidentally, you can start at the beginning of any level and use AO's cheat codes to give yourself weapons to at least make it to the first pattern buffer. You can then use a saved game editor - not sure if they exist for Windows, though - to restore your weapons complement to what you originally had.
