running marathon full screen

I've recently set up marathon 2/a1 and am having problems trying to get it to run in full screen mode. I had the same issue with M1A1: after setting it to run full screen in the graphics menu, and returning to the game menu, my game crashes. When I try to open it again, it crashes, and I have to reinstall. Any advice? I'm running windows XP, by the way.
