Hmm...this makes no sense. Compilers and StuffIt write applications to the disk; and AppleScript can launch any external application a script asks it to. AIM (or any other program easily hacked over the Internet) could save an application in the Startup Items folder, and OS 9 wouldn't even give you a warning.
