I do sing, but only because it helps me keep in character. Most of us don't do voices at all for the roles, because the soundtrack is still playing from the movie and most people's voices can't be heard over it (much less the audience's call-backs). I, however, can apparently deafen a crowd like that with my voice. Don't try to get me to speak at all after two shows in a row, though... Basically, Blake, what we do is we play the movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on a movie screen. The audience has all, mostly, seen the movie a bajillion times and have "call-backs", wherin they yell things at the screen and each other which adds to the humor of the experience (think Mystery Science Theater 3000.... on crack, times 200 people). They also throw things appropriate for the various scenes, and play with assorted props. Oh yeah, and since it's a musical after all, people often get up and dance. Then we, the cast, get up on stage in costumes that mimic those of the actors on screen, and with props and such as well, act out the parts on stage, often with a variety of thematic twists. Most casts have a "stage" that consists of the seatless area at the front of a movie theater and little to no real props. We're lucky enough to have a cast member who owns a roundhouse stage theater, in which we hand a movie screen. (We also get to have parties there. You should've seen our New Year's bash). And another, now dead cast donated some awesome props to use a few years back. On top of all that, Rocky shows also have elaborate "pre-shows", featuring an M.C. to give the rules of the show (which turn out to be funny because there are also call-backs to the rules, and we'd recognize most of the regular audience members [naked], so we play along with them). The pre-show also features the "Virgin Sacrifice", wherein people who have never seen Rocky in a theater with a cast and all this crap, called "Virgins" (and conveniently marked with a V by their friends), are brought up on stage and made to do fun, funny and sometimes embarrassing things for the amusement of all. As for what the show is actually ABOUT... uhm... See, there's this innocent young couple named Brad and Janet, who get engaged and go to visit their old schoolteacher Dr. Scott, and along the way their car breaks down and they find a castle in the woods and ask if they can use their phone, but it turns out the castle is owned by an alien transvestite mad scientist from the planet Transsexual (in the galaxy of Transylvania) named Frank-N-Furter, and tonight he is unveiling his creation, a man-made man named Rocky Horror, who it turns out was built with half the brain of ex-delivery boy Eddie, who was the previous lover of Frank's groupie Columbia, and also the newphew of their dear Dr. Scott, who now works for the Buearo of Investigation of U.F.O.'s, and shows up at the castle looking for Eddie only to find a bunch of aliens like Franky. After a brief dinner, all hell breaks loose, most everybody gets turned to stone and reanimated in lingerie for a floor show, after which Frank's servants Riff Raff and Magenta, also aliens from Transsexual, kill both Frank and Rocky, as well as Columbia in the process, and beam the entire house back home, leaving Brad, Janet and Dr. Scott mostly naked in the middle of the woods. Oh, and uh, pretty much everybody sleeps with everybody else somewhere in the process. Our next shows are 8:00 PM and midnight, January 29th, at 150 South Street in San Luis Obispo, CA. Come see us and have a blast :-) |
