Durandal refers to the S'pht'Kr we see as their "Defenders". That's basically their battle armor we're seeing. In fact I think he even calls it that at some point.
It's like the difference between Bob's jumpsuit and the player's battle armor. Regular S'pht wear robes; super power combat S'pht wear hardened shells.
In Eternal I went to far as to say that the old S'pht, of all clans, had the same style of battle armor, which is why you see "S'pht'Kr" of different colors fighting each other in Chapter 3.
