Eternal Volunteers - Boiler Room
Posted By: Adam AshwellDate: 1/4/05 1:23 p.m.

This is the second level of Eternal, "Boiler Room." It's composed primarily of eight boilers arranged around a big central...room with a big sewagefall in it. The boiler rooms have usually a 1x shield recharger, and sometimes a pattern buffer, oxygen recharger, and in on one occasion (eastern boiler), a 2x recharger. Most of the boilers are connected to eachother via underwater passages. Oddly, however, there are some boilers not connected this way.

Anyway, a terminal tells us that we've been sent to the wrong place as a result of the EMP attack on the Marathon made by the Pfhor. There are Pfhor here now - not in great numbers, though, and it seems not only an odd place to strike in the initial invasion, but also I think a much better effect could be achieved if the Pfhor seemed more like they were invading and not teleporting almost randomly. After all, the Pfhor invasion has just begun - that provides some very unique opportunities.

Your initial objective is to find a chip that was misplaced. It's in the bottom of the south-eastern boiler. You have no need to visit any other rooms really. The boiler rooms are also surrounded by a very narrow hallway, which you can enter from several transitions between boiler rooms. These hallways can be a bit dangerous - they're too narrow to manuver in, you can often be attacked from two sides at once, and they're pretty dark. Watch out.

In the north-eastern corner we find an area added onto the original by D-M.A. Very well-constructed, it's quite cool. There's a door that's meant, I believe, to close behind you, but it can be propped open. There's a big, big room with a beautiful lighthing effect - must've used one hell of a lot of polys though. This room can be a bit difficult, but it can be cleared out without too much trouble. Inside a small room contained in here there're four switches opening doors in the big hallway. Flip them and return to the hallway, where four doors (two on the east, two on the south) are open. There's no reason to go into the eastern conductor room at all - the southern one contains the chip insertion.

The conductor rooms are actually a rather cool combat area. Don't fall down, though - getting back up takes a long ride on a slow moving elevator (non-player activated). Once you clear the room, fill up on shields and save your game, as you may need them on the next level. Insert the chip and teleport out.

All in all, this was a rather dull level. There wasn't much of an atmosphere, and the layout was incredibly symmetrical. D-M.A.s addition was interesting, but could've used more carnage.

Well, that's it. Tomorrow I'll be doing level three, "Stark Raven Mad."

Oh, and a note...I don't think I should do level eight, as I was the one who made it. But we can deal with that when we get there.
