Actually I believe the halo universe isn't exactly a pre or sequel to any of the bungie games, it's my sincere beliefs that while all the similarities are intentional and glaring, it's really just their chance to re-do Marathon in a better engine without actually calling it Marathon.

Which isn't to say they wont throw tons of "OMG THON REFERENCE" or "
OMG (bungie game) REFERENCE" in there, but that's probably just to please the fans and because they want to.

Not to dispel the illusion of having all their worlds linked, but the dates on marathon and the dates on halo conflict greatly. Ask FoBo about it if you really wanna get into it.
