There's also the fact that Durandal didn't say that you could see the Nahk stars from Earth: just that "if you look to their stars today...". The impression I got of that, given FTL drives and galaxy-spanning civilizations, was "if you cruise over to where their stars used to be, you'll just find yourself in a nebula". Nothing about them being visible from Earth at all. Durandal most likely knows about them the same way he knows about the Nahk themselves: from Pfhor records. If he were relying on Earth-visible information, all he might know is that a bunch of stars blew up; nothing about how or why.
