They weren't really invaders. The French (ie Charlemagne, Roland et al) were invading Spain, and the Muslims were fighting for the Spanish. The Saracens were basically portrayed as sub-human infidels, but what would you expect from something written in 12th Century France?
It's pretty overt that Islam is perceived as "bad" - one of the main heroes is the Bishop, who is idolised almost as much as Roland because they go out fighting for God and destroying infidels. It shouldn't be too hard an essay to write, if you actually read the poem (yes all ~4000 lines). What's the word limit?
