In the Gherrit White term, he looks at his hands and sees them melting for second... if Durandal was talking about hisself metaphoricially, could the hand be Durandal melting away at the end of the universe? And perhaps the bars represent the time he has left before the closure of the universe... as we all know Durandal was obsessed with pondering his existence metaphoricially and equated it with true freedom.
