Couldn't have described my love for Photoshop better myself.
I completely agree with the filters ideas, mixing it up and the fade are the best. Also, try the history tool, works like fade only on specific areas. Also, on the blood, you might try the liquify filter. That thing is bad ass. Make sure you use all the tools when you do it too ;-)
Another great thing is the Adjustments-I almost never 'am done' until I tweak the hue/sat, brigh/contrast, etc.
