In Response To: Beyond Aurora (Andrew Nagy)

: I always play in software.

Why? What's the point of even using AO then?

: Is it even possible yet to get 128x128 graphics on
: a Mac with only 8MB VRAM?

The basic textures in Shapes are all 128x128. "Hires" is considered in Marathon parlance to be 256x256. Eternal's "hi res" are 512x512, with "mid res" 256 and lores 128 also available. The "lores" textures, all 130 of them per set (about 4x as many as the original game), still only use about 4MB of VRAM at a time. (If you somehow had all 5 sets loaded it would be 20MB but how or why would you do that?).

: Isn't hardware mode still buggy, with terminals
: not showing or flickering or something?

Not in my experience. The only bugs I've found at all with hardware mode are that some textures at some extreme viewing angles will "wobble" a little bit, and that transparent liquids don't work with hires replacement textures, but you don't get transparent liquids in software mode anyway, do you?

: Which reminds me. From ScenarioNews, June 29 update, about Beyond Aurora:
: "Note on getting the Dusk textures to work: Make sure you have OpenGL
: on in Aleph One and that the Scripts and Textures folders are inside the
: Aleph One folder. The manuals that come with the new games explain it
: further."

: I haven't gotten around to downloading it yet (what with PF etc), but does
: that mean I can't use it without OpenGL mode? That ####!

Why? Newer stuff requires newer equipment. Why else are people improving Aleph One? If you just want to play standard Marathon... then play standard Marathon! AO makes things better, but it requires more resources to do so. Thus is the nature of all software development.
